Why coherence
Overview
In this lecture you'll explore the single question the whole protocol exists to answer: what is time actually for, and what does almost every instrument miss when it measures only that time passed?
Most systems measure activity, existence, or ownership. They count transactions, stamp timestamps, and track tokens. Almost none of them measure the thing that actually matters: whether coherent, intentional transformation happened during a stretch of time. A clock tells you an interval passed. It cannot tell you whether anything worth the interval happened inside it.

The gap has a name
When you measure activity but not transformation, a gap opens, and the corpus gives it a name: temporal debt. It is the divergence between sequenced activity that looks productive and the validated coherent change that actually occurred. Eight hours at a desk are recorded by the clock. How many of those hours produced real, intended change is invisible to the clock.
This is not a harmless gap. It accumulates, silently, until something gives. The 2008 financial crisis was accumulated temporal debt detonating after decades of activity that scored beautifully on chronological metrics: quarterly earnings, stock prices, GDP. The replication crisis in science is the same debt made visible: millions of papers, many of which cannot be reproduced. The pathology is structural and measurable, and it is currently invisible to the instruments most systems use.
The move the protocol makes
CTP/IP is built on one move: stop measuring that time passed, and start measuring that transformation occurred. UTC measures sequence. CTP/IP measures substance. Together they form a complete temporal coordinate, the same way latitude needs longitude.
Crucially, the protocol does not tell you what counts as transformation in your domain. It gives you a way to measure what you decide matters, with cryptographic integrity and a permanent record nobody can rewrite. You choose the substance. The protocol records, honestly, whether it actually happened under your declared intent.
Figure 1.1 - Two clocks. A chronological clock counting raw activity beside a causal clock counting validated transformation. The widening gap between them is temporal debt.
Mechanics
The mechanic shows causal time accruing. The counter advances only when a cycle validates; the clock is irrelevant. Time is generated from coherence, not measured against the wall.
